Your diet may be a contributory factor in the build up of uric acid ultimately leading to a gout attack. A diet that contains high purine foods (see Gout Causes) will increase the levels of uric acid, so it is important to follow a gout diet. Advice can be gained by dietician.
Purine is also found naturally within our body cells; as the purine is broken down, uric acid is formed and so is a natural chemical and responsible for the protection of blood cells from damage. Approximately two thirds of the uric acid formed comes from the breakdown of purine within our bodies and one third comes from the food we consume so it is this final third that we have control over and the ability to reduce the consumption of high purine products.
The following has been categorised into 2 areas:-
Mid range purine content foods
Low purine content foods
Mid range purine content foods can be included in your gout diet but should be consumed in moderation and chosen based on the severity and frequency of the attacks. Low purine content foods can be consumed generally.
Vegetables (exc. vegetables on the high purine list - see Gout Causes)
Fruits / Jams / Marmalade / Olives
Recent research has proved that regular high doses of Vitamin C greatly reduce the risk of reoccurring gout attacks. Another recent study by the ARS (Agricultural Research Service) claim that the consumption of cherries or cherry juice may help combat the symptoms of gout typically inflammation and reduce the levels of uric acid.
